Book on Table

Theo's Ocean Discovery

From a small idea to a published book...

Inspired by travelling to countries in Asia, I began to brainstorm ideas about the devastating impact of plastic pollution and waste dumped into our oceans daily. While my book is very simplistic in its style and design, it carries a powerful message.

During my time as an educator, I have observed varying abilities when it comes to writing. Writing can be challenging and children often find it difficult to know where to start. Some may be full of ideas but do not know where to begin while others simply do not see the purpose of writing. It is important to focus on areas of interest and a passion for the subject you're writing about. From there, imagination, creativity and your unique voice can be given a platform.

I hope that young writers see that it is possible to turn one small idea into a published book. My lessons build confidence in writing as well as allowing a child's personal voice to be woven throughout.

You can achieve anything when you set your mind to it!

Theo's Ocean Discovery

Children’s books have long held the power to shape minds and inspire action, and Theo’s Ocean Discovery is no exception. Written with heart and purpose, this captivating story introduces young readers to one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time — plastic pollution in our oceans.

The story follows Theo, a curious and adventurous fish who sets off to explore the wonders of the sea. At first, he is excited by the mysterious treasures he uncovers beneath the waves but his excitement quickly turns to sadness when he realises that these so-called “treasures” are actually trash — plastic bottles, bags, and other debris polluting the ocean.

This emotional moment becomes a turning point, both for Theo and for the readers. It helps children connect to the real-world problem of ocean pollution in an age-appropriate and relatable way. The book delivers a powerful message without overwhelming young readers, offering just the right mix of storytelling and education.

Inspired by the author’s own experiences on a trip to the Philippines, Theo’s Ocean Discovery brings authenticity and global awareness to the page. The vibrant illustrations and gentle narrative make it an engaging read for children, while the built-in discussion points at the end encourage further thought and conversation. These questions help children explore how their everyday choices — especially around plastic use — can impact the planet.

Whether used at home as a conversation starter or in the classroom as part of a broader lesson on oceans, climate change, or sustainability, this book is an invaluable resource. It’s a perfect tool for educators looking to introduce complex environmental topics in a way that is meaningful and accessible.

At its core, Theo’s Ocean Discovery empowers children to see themselves as part of the solution. It invites them to imagine a cleaner, healthier ocean — and to play a role in making that vision a reality.
