Why is the 11+ important?
Passing the 11+ is highly competitive with pass rates ranging widely across different regions.
The 11+ is a significant milestone that can greatly impact a child's educational trajectory. Preparing for this exam often requires dedicated tutoring and practise to develop the necessary skills and confidence.
What is the 11+?
The 11+ is an academic selection exam taken by children in their final year of primary school, typically age 10-11.
It is designed to identify the most academically gifted students who will thrive in a grammar school environment.
It typically consists of English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning.

11+ Foundation Skills
Foundation classes cover the basic 11+ skills in Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English in a fun and engaging way.
The 11+ contains unfamiliar topics and question types so it is important that your child becomes familiar and confident with different question types.
At the beginning, it is crucial to ensure core Maths skills (e.g. times tables) are rock-solid and to expand vocabulary lesson by lesson.

Mock Tests
Children experience exam conditions and the process of transferring their answers to an answer sheet. Mock tests help conquer those nerves and make the real test seem less daunting. Mock exams help build confidence and highlight any areas that need work.

11+ Boost
11+ Boost builds on the foundation skills in Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Maths and English and prepares your child for the more challenging questions.
The 11+ is taken at the start of Year 6 and can include topics not covered in school. 11+ Boost extends Maths and English knowledge, all of which is a great foundation for SATs and secondary school.
11+ Boost also builds exam skills, speed and confidence.

Top Ten Tips To Pass The 11+
The 11+ is a very specific and robust test. It is highly competitive. In order to have the best chance of success, it's important for children to regularly attend classes, complete homework tasks, read every evening and revise and use the vocabulary shared each week.

1. Understand the exam format
The 11+ varies by area and school, so first find out which subjects are tested: Verbal reasoning (VR), Non-verbal reasoning (NVR), Maths, English. Look up the exam board (e.g. GL, CEM, or local consortium) — each has a slightly different style.

4. Practise under timed conditions
Time pressure is what catches most students out. Set a timer when doing practise papers - aim to finish just before the time limit. Then review accuracy vs. speed to find the right balance.

7. Practise reasoning
and logic
For non-verbal and verbal reasoning: look for patterns, symmetry, and sequences. Use elimination techniques and practise spotting odd ones out and analogies.

2. Start early and plan
Ideally, begin at least 9–12 months before the exam. Make a study schedule that includes weekly practice in each subject, review sessions, and timed mock tests. Consistency beats cramming.

5. Review your mistakes
Don’t just mark right and wrong. Ask why you got it wrong - misunderstanding, careless mistakes, or lack of knowledge. Write these down in a 'Mistake Book' to see patterns and improve faster.

8. Develop exam confidence
Simulate real test conditions — quiet room, timed paper, no help. The more familiar it feels, the less nervous you’ll be on the day.

3. Master the basics
Strong foundations make advanced questions easier: English: spelling, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary. Maths: times tables, fractions, percentages, problem solving. VR/NVR: pattern recognition, logic, vocabulary links.

6. Build vocabulary daily
For verbal reasoning and comprehension, a rich vocabulary is key. Read quality books, use flashcards or apps, and learn word roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

9. Rest, nutrition, mindset
Sleep and breaks are as important as study. Eat brain-friendly foods (fish, nuts, fruit), stay hydrated, and take breaks between study sessions.

10. Stay positive and consistent
Don’t panic over occasional low scores - progress takes time. Celebrate small improvements.
